Career Building Activities

The career building activities was used to help me learn about my possible career interest, competencies, and work culture. Based off the results I matched up closely with the social service/human service field. This information was accurate because I have always had a passion to work closely with the community and social services. I also received my AA and BS in human service management. The competencies asked a series of questions to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses, which was also no surprise to me. My strengths are taking initiative, strategizing, and adapting to change and my weaknesses are following instructions, persuading, and innovation. This exercise was helpful in identifying my personal competencies to understand my strengths and what areas I need improvement. In a management role building my strengths and developing my weak areas can increase the performance level in my department. Employees seek motivation, direction, and leadership from their managers. Effectively communicating with staff will increase productivity. Part of communication is listening managers usually dictate to employees rather than understand the needs of the employees. The type of manager and leader I strive to become includes working as a team player, paying attention to detail, building other leaders, and having great organizational skills.

Developing my communication skills include listening, building trust, and understanding the needs of the individual. Listening to the needs of others is major because effective listening includes not just hearing what the person is speaking but also understanding what the person is trying to communicate and how he or she feels. Managers have the responsibility of creating an environment, which employees respect management and also feel comfortable enough to share his or her ideas and opinions.
