The first blog I looked at was a video blog entitled “Everyday Sociology Talk: Annette Lareau on Social Class and Parenting”. The first statement I would to comment on was the fact that the interviewee said that the Middle Class treated their children as a project. She also said that the parents often felt obligated to improve the skills of their parents. The middle class are people who have a college degree, not necessarily income based. I found this very interesting because my parents have degrees, however I never felt as though they treated me as a project. I believe that they did want my skills to improve, however they provided me with everything I needed and they allowed me the freedom to create my own learning experiences. The first example is when I wanted to play football when I was in fifth grade. They allowed me to do so, and as I result I learned many lessons that have helped me throughout my life. The next statement she made related to the working class. She said that although they may not have as much money as other families, they are still able to effectively provide for and teach their children. They also relied on other people to watch their children, which may be different from other social classes. This may be true because both parents may need to work in order to provide for their family, as opposed to other families where only one parent provides for them. Finally I found the fact that the children of the working/ poor social classes had fundamentally similar lives, as opposed to children of the middle class, whose lives had significant differences, including the amount of conversations at meals, etc.

The next blog I read is the “Rachel Jeantel, Handwriting, and No Child Left Behind” post. This post commented on how Rachel Jeantel was harshly ridiculed during the George Zimmerman Trial, as she took the stand. This is true because her behavior was deemed inappropriate for some of the viewers, and people ridiculed her because she could not...
