Type 1 diabetes is when the body does not produce insulin, which is used to convert sugars and starches into energy needed for daily life. Type 1 diabetes is normally produced during adolescence, but can occur at any age (Type 1 Diabetes n.d.). It is also more of a genetic type of diabetes but can also occur without being genetic. There is not a cure for type 1 diabetes but with proper eating habits, life expectancy is longer than in the previous decades. There are many risk factors associated with type 1 diabetes and sometimes people do not see the factors, especially in younger children, until insulin is needed for treatment. Risk factors are different for many people but kidney failure, blindness, and amputation of limbs are all some of the factors that can occur if this disease is not kept under control. When a diabetic has a cut on the foot, it is more severe for them than a person that does not have this. It can easily become infected and gangrene can set in. Then, amputation may be necessary to prevent the infection from spreading up the leg. Blindness can occur because of the high sugar levels in the body. Kidney failure can occur if you are not checking your blood levels regularly. When doctor’s appointments arise, get the doctor to check for protein in the urine. This can all help prevent kidney disease. Symptoms and signs that occur in type 1 diabetes can be looked for in order to catch the disease early. Not all people have the same signs and if type 1 diabetes is genetic in the family, get the doctor to check thoroughly for any possible signs. Feeling tired and thirsty all the time are two signs of diabetes. Blurred vision and urinating frequently are also some signs of the development of diabetes. Getting yearly doctor’s exams are the best way from preventing any type of disease or catching anything early.
