Questionnaire Analysis

Questionnaire Critique:

The questionnaire does provide the overall required data with some good points and some shortcomings as well.

* Short

* Not overly complex

* Longer surveys tend to not keep a respondents attention span.

* Provides a suggestion section by incorporating an open response option which many respondents truly appreciate

* Income range is important because it can aid in categorizing the habits of commuters in different income brackets. If for instance, 70% of the commuters are in the lower income bracket, the survey would be useful in determining less expensive modes of transportation such as the use of public transportation and resulting in less congestion.

Shortcomings

When the survey asks, “Please list all of the trips that you made downtown today”, this can cause a skew in the results as it is lacking a “date” section. More than likely, there will be an increase in the amount of trips during a normal week versus a weekend period.

Overall design appears to be vague and confusing, in particular, the section where it addresses, “Trip to the downtown area, First trip IN downtown area, Second Trip in downtown area and so on, If this is confusing to a respondent to the survey, they nay rush to complete not fully understanding what the questionnaire is actually requesting.

A poor measurement process can also lead to bias. In survey research, the measurement process includes the environment in which the survey is conducted, the way that questions are asked, and the state of the survey respondent.

Response bias refers to the bias that results from problems in the measurement process. Some examples of response bias are given below.
