Week 1 Case

1. As the person in charge of socializing newly hired nurses, which steps would I take to make sure they understand the culture of the hospital and how would I help them cope with stress, in order to prevent future burnout?

To begin with, I would make sure that each applicant had a very clear picture of the job requirements and hospital culture during the interview process so that the potential hire could make an informed decision as to whether to accept the position or not. After potentially picking a new hire, I would have them in for a second interview and pair them with someone of equal status to show them around and answer any questions they might have. As a person who has interviewed for multiple jobs, I know that there are questions I’ve had but didn’t dare ask the people interviewing me for fear of not being hired or making myself look like a complainer.

After the people had been hired, I would have them be part of a formal mentoring process in which they were paired with equals, and participated in group socialization exercises such as informal discussions and team-building activities. Counseling, feedback and support would all be a part of it.

In order to prevent burnout, I would allow flexible work schedules, as long as the mission was covered, have great benefits in the form of health care, tuition assistance and outside perks and discounts. I would incorporate a stress management class/group for anyone who wanted to attend whenever they wished to.

2. What are some of the challenges hospitals face in trying to create a supportive environment for reducing stress?

One important factor with hospitals is the fact that they are dealing with life and death situations. Any little mistake can result in catastrophic effects for themselves, the hospital and the patients and families.
