In Principals of Management, Dr. Richard Daft states that there are three critical skills that anyone in management must have in order to effectively perform their responsibilities. The skills are, human skills, conceptual skills and technical skills.

After taking the management aptitude questionnaire in chapter one I am pleased with my results. Below are my results after answering the questions.

Conceptual skills – 22

Human skills – 20

Technical skills – 17

I did not expect to score very high on technical skills as that has always been a work in progress for me. Technical skills refer to the competence in the performing specific task and how well you understand it. I am not very technical and strive to improve those skills. When it comes to technical skills I could use some additional patience and understanding of the processes and why they have to happen the way they do. My view on performing my job is learning how the person before me did the job and then if need be trying to find a less complicated way of doing things to get a job done. In my current position the technical skills have been a challenge as technology and the work environment have not been updated in such a long time. My current job still uses microfilm, personal computers with three inch floppy drives and outdated software that hinders the ease of the work. I need to continue to address my lack of technical skills to ensure I understand my job first before trying to modify how the work gets done.

I pride myself in being a people person. Human skills involves the ability to work alone, with others and in group setting productively and effectively when needed. Over the last 25 years of work experience I have learned to focus on my strengths and learn from my mistakes and the...
