OPM 300 Introduction to Operation Management

Module 2 Session Long Project

Professor: Dr. Zhen Li

After looking at the background information it was stated that there are four basic process strategies. The company I chose in my previous assignment was Dell Inc. Dell is mainly known for catering to their customers by building exactly what they need for their desktop and laptops. This company uses the mass customization strategy for its business. The very first slide to the PowerPoint also used Dell Computer Company as a primary example. It said that the mass customization was a difficult strategy with huge rewards.

The PowerPoint slide explained mass customization as the rapid, low-cost production of goods and service to satisfy increasingly unique customer desires. How does this relate to Dell Computer Company? The prior assignment research stated that Dell primary focus was to build personalize computers for their customers. This is a primary example of mass customization. For a company to be able to cater to his costumers and produce the quality of computers at the rate that Dell did, that shows why they are among the leaders of computer manufacturing.

As far as the location and distribution center, Dell headquarters is located in Round Rock, Texas. The benefits of being located in Round Rock, Texas is that it allowed Dell to switch the power sources of the Round Rock headquarters to more environmentally friendly ones, with 60% of the total power coming from TXU Energy wind farms and 40% coming from the Austin Community Landfill gas-to-energy plant operated by Waste Management, Inc.(www.wikipedia.com)
