Organizational Commitment and Communication

Inside an organization many influences exist that affect the group communication. Leadership styles, sources of power, types of motivation, and workforce commitment each play a role in the organization’s communication. The Walt Disney Company founded by Walt Disney in 1923 has seen the effects of each aspect on communication and has made each part an ingredient to their success. The Walt Disney Company’s mission “To make people happy” and their six values; innovation, quality, community, storytelling, optimism, and decency is what guides the employees within the organization (Disney Careers, n.d.). In this paper, the effects leadership, power, motivation, and commitment play on the group communication at Walt Disney Company are addressed.

Leadership Styles

Leadership is defined as the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals (Robbins & Judge, 2011). An organization needs strong leadership in to be the most successful. Walt Disney Company has had several CEOs over the years with different leadership styles. Each of their leadership style has affected the group communication. Walt Disney, the founder, was a charismatic leader with vision and articulation that started the culture seen at the company today. He encouraged communication of ideas and rewarded risk taking from employees. His goals for the company and employees made Walt Disney Company the status quo for other organizations. The company serves a blueprint for people in all fields looking for productive methods to improve their businesses (Anderson, 2000). In 1984 Walt Disney changed to an autocratic leader. Michael Eisner was controlling, discouraged collaboration, and only used ideas he liked.
