INTRODUCTION

What Is Intranet?

Intranet is a network connecting an affiliated set of clients using standard internet protocols, most especially TCP/IP and HTTP. Intranet is also an IP-based network of nodes behind a firewall, or behind several firewalls connected by secure, possibly virtual, networks.

An intranet is a private computer network, typically part of a company's information technology infrastructure, used to host multiple websites and servers as the centre of corporate communication. Evaluating intranet portal software such as Microsoft Office SharePoint or IBM's Web-Sphere involves identifying executive sponsorship and strategic goals, assessing the portal software features and benefits relative to your company's needs and (ideally) establishing a pilot to determine whether the platform that tests your design and navigation functions well in your in infrastructure.

How Do We Make Use of An Intranet?

An intranet is essentially an Internet contained within an organization. Some characteristics of an Intranet are:

* Contained. An Intranet typically is a local area network (LAN) or a Wide Area Network (WAN) within an organization.

* Shielded. An Intranet offers the "common language" of the Internet without the loss of privacy of the Internet.

* Gated. An Intranet can be connected via gateways to selected Internet content or access.

* Functional. An Intranet is a fully operational network for organization-wide communication, information, and interaction.
