During the time I was in high school I worked at a local car wash. My boss was a lady by the name of Krista. Not only was she the General Manager of the car wash but she was also one of the owners of the business. As you can imagine, with so much vested into this business my boss took her job quite seriously. She wanted to provide the best quality customer service possible and would incentivize her employees to do so. She had many different methods that she would implement in order to get the most out of her employees. Some weekends she would provide the car washes work crew with free Gatorades throughout the day. She would usually do this on the hottest summer days. Other days she would give the work crew free ice cream at the conclusion of the work day. This was usually done on the most busy work days, and was presented to the crew as a sign of gratitude for their hard work. The staff responded well to these rewards and Krista was viewed as a good boss amongst the employees.

I believe that Krista showed good leadership qualities as manager of the Car Wash. While spending money on goods for the employees may not seem beneficial from a managerial perspective due to cost, she did it anyway because she knew it had a positive effect on her employee’s morale. This appears to be a good example of leadership “being more of an art than science”.
