THE ONE MINUTE MANAGER

Introduction

One Minute Manager written by Dr. Kenneth Blanchard and Dr. Spencer Johnson is a handbook, a management guide that revels in its simplicity. The One Minute Manager is not only the title of the book but also the character whose management style is put under close scrutiny. The One Minute Management consists of three components: the one minute goal setting, the one minute praising and the one minute reprimand. The One Minute Management is not magic, but it is magical whenever it works. The critical ideas in the one minute manager all come down to three simple techniques components: the one minute goal setting, the one minute praising and the one minute reprimand.

One minute goal setting

The core idea behind one minute goal setting is so simple. You just have to tell your staff what you want them to achieve and what you want them to do. Many employees are uncertain of what it is that they should do, what their responsibilities are, what their goals are. Perhaps one can try a little experiment. Pick two members of a team- a star and an average performer. Ask them to write down what their main goals for their jobs are what their responsibilities and accountabilities are and what are the important tasks they do that contribute to these goals. The One Minute Goal Setting dictates that goals should be written on a single sheet of paper using less than 250 words that when read will require no more than one minute.

Then compare the list. There’s a good chance that the list of the high performer is much more similar to the list of the average performer. It makes sense. How can anyone do a good job if they don’t know what’s expected on them? It is your responsibility to clarify the goals of each and every person who reports directly to you and to approve the goals for the employees at the next level down.
