After reading The One Minute Manager, my perception of what a manager should be has changed a lot. The things I will take away most and grow from are the three secrets the manager offers. The three secrets include one minute goals, one minute praisings, and one minute reprimands.

The first secret which is the one minute goal is a good tool because the manager and the employee are agreeing on what needs to be done by putting it into no more than one page. By doing this is makes it clear what the responsibilities are and what the person is being held accountable for. The employee should also take a minute every once in a while to look at their performance and see if it matches the goals. When I become a manager I would use this with my employees because it will let them know exactly what I expect from them and by writing it down they can be reminded of the goals without having to waste time in meetings to keep going over the goals. This process gives the employees a sense of independence in completing tasks by not having to constantly meet with them to go over what is needed because they will already know after the initial meeting.

The second secret is the one minute praisings, this also works well when a manager tells their employees immediately that the job they did was a job well done. As a manager I would tell the person what they did right and be specific about it, so they know I care to pay attention to what they do while working. I would also tell my employees how much they help the company and everyone else in the organization, including myself, while encouraging them to keep up the good work. To reinforce the positive that has come out of the persons work I would shake their hand; this would let the person know that I support them and the work they do.
