1. Why did the Swedish students do so poorly on the pre-test in Global Health of

Child Mortality Rates? (worse than the Chimpanzees)!

The Swedish students did so poorly on the pre-test in Global Health of Child ! Mortality Rates not due to ignorance, but because of pre-conceived ideas. There is ! a need to communicate. Even the professors were on par with the chimps.!

2. When the fertility rates are high (e.g many children), what happens to life ! expectancy rates? When fertility rates are low, what happens to life! expectancy rates? How have these factors (fertility rates and life expectancy ! rates) changed from 1963 to 2003 in developing countries?!

Small families had long lives, while large families had shorter lives. The developing! countries had larger families. As time goes on, the developing countries got better ! health. The morality is improving. In the 80’s in Bangladesh, Mom’s started ! promoting family planning. In the 90’s the HIV epidemic takes down the life ! expectancy in African countries. The rest of the world moves up to long life and ! smaller families. We saw a social change before we saw an economic change.!

3. Tell me two things you learned in Dr. Rosling’s discussion of GDP and child !

survival rates?!

The linearity is very strong between child survival and money. South Korea made ! very fast advancements and Brazil is much slower. Speed of development is very ! very different. The countries are moving more or less in the same rate as money! and health. It seems you can move much faster if you’re healthy first than if you’re ! wealthy first. You cannot buy health at the supermarket. You have to invest in health.! You have to get kids in school. You have to train the health staff and educate the ! population.!

4. Why is Dr. Rosling arguing that you can’t have the same solutions for poverty !
