1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The document is explaining a designing of an information System project “the Distributed Control system; or shortly DCS" at the Yibal area Field. Yibal area field is the oil and gas fields containing many projects either projects rely on oil services or gas services.

Due to the failure of distributed control system at the site, there are lacks in responsiveness from some controlling devices to an alarms coming from DCS. The system was very old and did not respond to all alarms coming from the field.

The Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) decided to use this project and gave it to consultant Company - Tebodin and Partner LLC - to do the consultation design to solve the problem and install new DCS at the field (Yibal Area) by System Vendor. The DCS designed to keep all devices in the field under control, monitor them from the control room to avoid any short cut in cables connected from one device to another, avoid the rising of temperature and pressure in the site, control all the transmitter and receivers in the field, protect long lead item such as control valve compressor from failure and finally keep the area safe.

The DCS is a computerized control system used to control the production line in the industry. The entire system of controllers is connected by networks for communication and monitoring. This system is very critical part in any field in Oman. The system controls many projects that involve oil and gas which is the main sources of income of Sultanate of Oman.

The project encountered a number of challenges during the course of designation, mainly; the complexity of install the system by System vendor in a vast number of equipment over the field. Most staff was fresh graduated employees and still need training in designing and preparing documentation and even in preparing estimation of how mush hours the project will take from an employee since from the starting point to the end of Designation.
