Racial Issues in My Community

Racial issues are an important part of any city in America today. America is a racially diverse country but still seems to have many problems as far as racial equality, race relations, and encouraging diversity. My community is in, what I think, is a fairly unique situation in terms of race. When researching my community in Auburn, Wa., According to U.S. Census bureau (2010), the percentage of whites 82.8%, 7.5% Hispanic Latino, 2.5% Native Americans, and 2.4% African American. I find this unique because even though the facts show this city as predominantly white, one city away in Tacoma, Wa., where around every corner it seems to be more racially diverse when just using judgments that are seen by the eye.
Cultural Minority and Majority
According to the statistics in my community the minorities are those of color and the majorities are whites. In my community even in the police departments and fire departments the minority is those of color. I have been in this community for 10 months and have not seen one person of color in these positions.
Cultural Living
Auburn is a cultural diverse community. Yes, it is predominantly white, but there are many people of other race and culture. Each race lives differently because of the way they are treated. When one is living in an area that is of one race and culture they are judged differently. I see this in about everywhere you go. I know that when I traveled to Detroit, MI. and stopped in Mississippi as a white girl traveling with a Hispanic, at the store we didn’t even make it out the car without the looks of disgust and judgments. For this reason I can imagine how the people of color in my community that is a majority of whites must feel. I know for this reason they must live their lives differently.
