“Artists make artworks for different reasons and using different techniques”

Artists make artworks for many different reasons. It is their expression of communication of their thoughts, feelings and their purpose for producing an artwork. To portray these messages, artist use various techniques to define these techniques or perhaps to reinforce their message in their artwork. This is known as conceptual art. Material practise however is the exploration of different techniques. Leonardo Da Vinci is a prime example to of the Renaissance but also, an artist to demonstrate that artist make artworks for different reasons. As Vinci lived Florence, Italy where in Renaissance movement started, artists were hired for the same purpose of a photographer and therefore aimed for realism whilst Sharon Goodwin on the other hand aimed to achieve a conceptual artwork

In contrast, Sharon Goodwin, a contemporary artist who approaches her art making practise differently to Leonardo da Vinci. Rather than aiming for realism, she aims to create a conceptual artwork with layers of meaning embedded in it. In her installations (interactive sculptures), she uses acrylic and watercolour on foamboard, perhaps because it is a modern art making material to apply and to deal with. Her art making process involves gathering inspiration, researching and collecting resources, repainting, collaging, ripping, folding, rubbing, rearranging and at times, destroyed to create the effect she desires. Sharon is a Melbourne-based artist who artworks are influenced by the history and popular culture of today’s society in Australia. Her artworks reference medieval ages and are based around gothic and occult imagery and incorporating ideas of destruction and chaos. For example, her artwork “Afterworld” in 2008 uses acrylic and watercolour on foamboard to produce this installation. This artwork displays a greyscale clump of body features from different animals combined together to create this reconfigured...
