Biblical Worldview: We Are Made in the Image of God

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him.”(Genesis 1:27) This is an amazing fact. That we humans, were created in the image of the almighty, the all-knowing, creator God. What does this mean to us? Why is this fact important to christians and to the church? How does this belief affect the way we treat others? As part of a church staff it is very important to know and understand why God would create us in His likeness and how this fact affects the way we interact with our church members.

“There is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him” (1 Corinthians 8:6). I love reading this verse. In my own life I have really had to own up to its meaning. I used to have a hard time understanding the fact that “we exist for Him.” What does this mean. Why do we exist for God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 tells us that “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” We were created for His glory. Not for our own selfish desires, but God wants everything we do to be for Him. It is because of God that we exist and as we interact with those around us, we have to be very aware of that. Strictly because as christians we are commanded to carry out His love toward others.

I truly believe that we become what we love and what we hold closest to our hearts. Just as a professional athlete who has given their life to their chosen sport, who lived, breathed, and couldn’t get enough of the game, we as christians should be the same way toward our God. The professional athlete gave their all to the sport and all their hard work paid off. As a christian I believe the closer we get to God, the more like Him we will become. So that means that as we strive to know God more, the more our lives will reflect God’s image. How do we do...
