Discuss what is meant by employee engagement and outline how employee engagement can be improved.

Employee engagement has recently become a popular topic within the area of management, with numerous studies and papers published pertaining to it. Unfortunately, despite the popularity, the procurement of a ‘universal’ definition about employee engagement has been problematic. But, despite this, certain concepts such as job involvement, job satisfaction and organisational commitment have been used in various interpretations and, thus, have allowed us to gain a rudimentary understanding of employee engagement. However, improvements to employee engagement, especially in the area of human resource development (HRD), can dramatically assist organsations, and their managers, in effectively understanding and applying employee engagement to gain higher performance, lower costs, lower employee turnovers and competitive advantage.

In the world of management, the procurement of a concrete definition and meaning of employee engagement has been met with difficultly. This has been due to the fact that there is a lack of empirically driven research into the area of employee engagement (Shuck, 2011) and, as a result, a proper, concrete definition has been difficult to achieve. This problem has been further compounded upon by the fact that employee engagement is closely related to more established constructs such as job satisfaction and organisational commitment (Saks & Gruman, 2014). But, despite all the confusion, disagreement and lack of consensus around the meaning of employee engagement, the idea that the cognitive, emotional, and behavioural energy an employee directs toward positive organisational outcomes (Shuck, Twyford, Reio Jr. & Shuck, 2014), is somewhat universal.
