How Does Divorce Have Long Term Effects on Children

How Does Divorce Have Long Term Effects on Children

As times have changed over the years divorce has become a growing trend. Research states that divorce is hereditary, stated by Wallerstein, divorce comes from a “Divorce Gene” (Wallerstein, 2000). That would mean that divorce would be an internal influence. Divorce doesn’t come from genetics. That would be saying, “Since my Great-Great grandfather divorced my Grandmother every other generation in my family has to get a divorce because it’s hereditary”. Divorce is an external influence that is related to the nurture aspect of human development. Being in a happy marriage or pretending to have a happy marriage? Depending on the circumstances which would be better? Those are questions that come into consideration when a married couple decides to divorce. Children are a major concern in divorce. Parents can find ways to keep the divorce healthy for the sake of the children. Children from divorce homes can reap benefits from the situation by watching their parents cope responsibly to a negative situation. If there was always fighting and arguing between their parents being without that tension can create a better environment for those children. A more mature, realistic, and flexible personality is molded into children from divorced homes. There is no positive side to divorce when children are involved. In a divorced family the ride on the emotional rollercoaster lasts years even after the divorce. You always have that one parent that talks down on the other parent and always puts the child in the middle. Research states, that family tension created before and after the divorce cause children to do poorly in school, become sexual active early, and become rebellious. (Wallerstein, 2000) So what does this “New Age” divorce culture really mean? How does its severity effect children during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood?
