Contingent Workforce Planning at Motorola

Motorola established itself in 1928, and was founded by Paul V. Galvin in Chicago, Illinois. The company’s first product was the “B” battery eliminator-a device that enabled battery-powered radios to be powered by household electricity. In addition the company started with $565 in working capital and five employees (Motorola.com). Motorola is an international company, which works in 70 countries all over the world and had in the year 2000 about 147,000 employees. It is organized into six business units:

* the semiconductor products sector (SPS),

* the broadband communications sector (BCS),

* the integrated electronic systems sector (IESS),

* the commercial, government and industrial solutions sector (CGISS),

* the global telecom solutions sector (GTS),

* the personal communication sector (PCS) (Motorola.com, & Beaulieu, 2002, p. 2).

Motorola has a long history of innovation and has proven to connect people to each other around the world in exclusively new ways.

As Motorola continues the increasing need of contingent workers they must implement a staffing strategy that creates a flexible workforce and develops a network of suppliers that provide talent driven by specialization. In addition, they must incorporate an outsourcing contingent workforce plan, an outsourcing framework and knowledge management in place. With Motorola’s re-evaluating of their business strategy they need to address these concerns as business conditions change and to incorporate policies and procedures.

These strategies, combined with a continued dedication of improving their talent necessary to create shareholder value, will allow Motorola to maintain and even expand its market position in the coming years of new technologies and product markets.
