When getting involved with healthcare, there are two specific types of healthcare services available in our system: personal health and community or population based services. In some ways, these two services are the same but in most ways they are different. Personal healthcare services focus on the provider and patient relationship. In community-or-population-based healthcare services are provided to prevent disease for large groups of people loving together in a community, city, or county. (Yesalis, Holt, & Politzer, 2013)

With personal primary care, which is often referred to as “first contact” care such as the care you receive from you doctor office, emergency room, or state health department just to name a few (Yesalis, Holt, &Politzer, 2013). The most common primary care would be from clinicians in general practice and medical specialists. Your family doctor is usually your main contact when you have non-emergency health issues. Only if you are primary doctor feels it is necessary your doctor will refer you to the proper specialist for more advanced testing. For example, women should have an annual physical exam done at least once a year. Women yearly physical are done by an OB-GYN (obstetrician/ gynecologist) or by a Nurse Practitioner at you state health department for women that have no insurance. OB-GYNs also specialize in care for pregnant women. It is very important for women ages 21 and older to receive an annual physical every year because you can minimize your chances of getting cervical cancer. Another example would be, doctors that specialize in internal medicine and infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, Herpes, and other sexually transmitted infection. You also have doctors that specialize in children from newborns to age eighteen. These doctors are Pediatricians.
