3-1 Homework: Is it Okay to Cry at Work?

Emotions and Moods are important in the study of Organizational Behavior and influence managerial practices and how organization members interact with each other and individuals outside the organization such as, vendors, customers and clients. Managers need to be able to motivate employees through the use of positive displays of emotion and moods and use positive feedback to make the employees feel positive about their jobs. Service employees need to project positive attitudes toward customers or clients to improve service experiences and negotiations. Controlling intense emotional responses is also important to maintaining positive morale within an organization. Being aware of the emotions of employees and co-workers can help managers predict and explain employee behavior and therefore react in a manner that benefits the organization (Robbins & Judge, 2013).

Factors Making Management of Emotions Ineffective

A factor that makes management of emotions ineffective in the military is the culture of discipline and toughness. Managing emotions can be difficult in the military where emotions are expected to be suppressed and the nature of the business leads members into situations that can trigger strong emotional responses. There are times when giving in to emotions can sometimes lead to catastrophic outcomes. In the warrior culture it is not often acceptable to give into emotions. The suppression of emotions can lead to serious psychological issues such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In the past 13 years of conflict the military has developed policies and services to help military personnel deal with emotions in efforts to lessen the effects of PTSD.
