The New York Daily News reported the tragic death of Eric Garner while being arrested. Footage shows Garner standing on the sidewalk in peace when the New York police officers approached him. Garner at the time, just broke up a fight. Although the police officers suspected Garner of doing something else, he was innocent and the officers had no proof otherwise. The New York police officers then ganged up on 400lb Eric Garner and choked him until he fell to the ground. Eric Garner was a husband and father of six. Garner has a history of asthma. Eric Garner is caught on camera yelling, “I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe! Eric Garner died while being arrested by a heart attack that was caused by the police choking him. He was already dead when the ambulance arrived. (Murray, 2014). There are a lot of issues going on in the footage shown. Not only was Eric Garner a 400lb man, he was a 400lb African American male surrounded by predominately white male cops smaller than him. Police brutality definitely greatly in this incident, because the officers abused their power. They acted without thinking, something officers should never do. With no proof they was ready to arrest this innocent man because they had the upper hand. It is hard for anyone to believe that this was not a misunderstanding. They judged Eric Garner because of the color of his skin and his size, they assumed because of these things, that he was of danger and was guilty. The communication was bad because the police officers were more focused on Eric Garner’s body language than the words that were coming out of his mouth. Lastly, The officers did not have patience, instead of staying calm and handling the situation professionally, the officers became involved in their own feelings. Being a police officer is more than carrying around a badge, it is carrying it with integrity, and the police officers that choked Eric Garner to death, an innocent man did not act with integrity.
