Crime Data Comparison

Crime is something that every city, town, and community in America has to deal with. Regardless of the geographic location, crime plaques the communities and cities across the United States. There are many different definitions of the word crime and just exactly what crime is. According to the Oxford Dictionary, crime is defined as “an action or omission that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law” (Oxford Dictionary, 2013). An example of a crime would be robbery, murder, or aggravated assault. These specifically, are labeled as violent crimes. “In 2012, an estimated 1,214,462 violent crimes occurred nationwide, an increase of 0.7 percent from the 2011 estimate” (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2013). Although crime affects all communities and cities in America, some crimes are more prevalent in certain geographic locations than they are in others.

For instance, looking at the city of Atlanta, GA located in a southern state in the United States we see specific estimated totals of robbery. The southern states in America are known for their unique traditions and cultures that are different than the rest of the United States. As reported by the Uniform Crime Report conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, there were an estimated total of 2,276 reported instances of robbery in 2012. Turning to a city located in a northern state of America, city of Atlantic City, NJ. According to the Uniform Crime Report, there were an estimated total of 322 reported instances of robbery in 2012. Again looking at the same crime in a much different geographical location, city of Anchorage, AK. This city is located on the west coast of the United States, however, much further north than the last city.
