Scientific Management

* Management characterized and guided by the use of scientific approaches to the solution of manegerial problems in business and industry

*  is a theory of management that analyzes and synthesizes workflows. Its main objective is improving economic efficiency, especially labor productivity.

* It was one of the earliest attempts to apply science to the engineering of processes and to management.

Frederick W. Taylor

- Father of scientific management

- was an American mechanical engineer who sought to improve industrial efficiency. He was one of the first management consultants. Taylor was one of the intellectual leaders of the Efficiency Movement and his ideas, broadly conceived, were highly influential in the Progressive Era. Taylor summed up his efficiency techniques in his book The Principles of Scientific Management.

Principles of scientific management

* The application of science in the development of man’s work.

* The scientific selection, training and development of workmen in order to achieve optimum eficiency.

* Adequate compensation of the workman according to his accomplishment and friendly cooperation between management and workers

* The equitable division of work and responsibilities between management and workers.

* Indicated by divisions, departments, and sections and it breaks up the work into manegerial units.

* This organizational structure is necessary because of the limitations of both human ability and time. It facilitates the task of handling the complex problems of supervisions, coordination and control.
