Characteristics of Abusers in Domestic Violence

In this report the characteristics of abusers will be thoroughly discussed and reviewed. The background of these characteristics will also be discussed. While in no way will this be an excuse for abuse or condone abuse. No form of abuse from either man or woman is tolerated and should be punished appropriately.

Some of the actions you might see an abuser conduct can vary depending on the person, but generally display a good majority of these traits. The abuser will keep track of what the intimate partner is doing all the time and will criticize their partner for little things. There is an old saying of a guilty conscience when being accused of being unfaithful. This isn’t necessarily true in this instance.

Often times the partner will accuse his or her partner of being unfaithful to judge reactions instill fear to prevent future indiscretions. The abuser will prevent their partner from seeing friends or family, going to work or school claiming, “they cause trouble”. The abuser often displays sever levels of control to the point where victims are not allowed to make personal decisions. Often times the abuser will get angry when drinking alcohol or using drugs. This is when often times the abuse becomes more prominent.

Humiliating and dehumanizing in front of peers or in public is also another trait that is commonly displayed amongst abusers. While getting violent or in the height of the moment will destroy personal property or items with value to the victim. Threatening is also another trait vastly used in abusive relationships. This can be threatening to hurt the partner, animals, children, or in fact actually carries through with threats of violence.
