Diversity Reflection

Diversity groups have been represented where I work have changed within one year. Last year it was black with blacks and white with whites. It was all jokingly but the black groups had a fake organization for what they called “us” black people. Other people outside the African American race had a little soul were able to be apart of it. In reality it was all for fun and games, but from the outside looking in someone might have got offended.

I live in St. Louis and in different parts of the city you see majority black (normally in places like the city). In areas such as north county, you see a mixture, but further out west you see majority all white. I grew up in University City which originally was a Jewish community and like St. Louis as a whole it also had certain neighborhoods where everyone looked the same. It’s something how we can become some limited and unexposed to diversity.

When I was growing up I only interacted with diverse groups when the opportunity became available . My elementary school was dominated by black students so it was a little difficult to have a friendship with someone that wasn’t available to even be your friend. Once I got to middle school, it became more diverse. I had a for the first time in life an asian friend and a friend from Pakistan The impact of this allowed me to see people my age of different cultures lifestyles. They weren’t too different from me.

I really don’t make an effort to learn more about diverse groups I’m not apart of. I guess that is mainly because I don’t have too much exposure to other groups. The most I do when I’m around a diverse group is ask about their background. I work closely with a caucasian lady and we discuss the differences in our cultures. For example we talk about how she has to wash her hair everyday and how I can wash mine every two weeks.
