Yakult

Levels of operation and mechanisation

A multinational organisation with large scale equipment used. A 'just-in-time' system of production is followed, which means Yakult is manufactured on demand to ensure the product is always delivered with a full shelf-life. Yakult’s "purpose built" factory in Dandenong (VIC) is a technologically advanced manufacturing facility. It incorporates some of the latest food processing equipment.

Research and development

The research done by Dr. Shirota has produced the drink. Our unique, patented "Shirota Strain" is exceptionally acid resistant. It easily survives the journey through the gastric juices and bile acids produced during digestion to arrive alive in our intestine, helping to keep our digestive system working efficiently. Also the development of ‘Yakult Light’ has started from research and development. ‘Yakult Central Institute for Microbiological Research’. Established in 1967 by Dr Shirota, the Yakult Research Institute is located in Tokyo, Japan. Its primary function is to investigate the use of microbes and their role in the digestive system. Today, over 170 research scientists and medical doctors are actively pursuing research aimed at applying microbes (bacteria) effectively in the prevention and treatment of many diseases.

Quality assurance

Yakult maintains a comprehensive quality assurance program in order to ensure that our product is of the highest quality. For this reason, samples are collected for laboratory analysis throughout the production process to confirm that the quality assurance measures in place have been effective.

Our testing involves more than 150 samples per production run, upon which a total of more than 200 tests are conducted. These determine Lactobacillus casei numbers, check for potential contaminants, microbiological quality, composition, acidity, physical attributes and taste. In addition, each bottle is inspected for undesirable markings and incorrect printing.
