Poisonwood

1. I believe the title is to show that even though Nathan Price thought that Jesus was good, it was poison to the community as it was bringing division. Not only that, the African people believed that only people who were cursed or had upset the gods would then come to Jesus to be saved. Jesus was simply a way to bring brainwash the community and have them adhere to the “white man’s” ways.

2. While Nathan Price thought the he was imparting wisdom on people he felt was not as wise as he, Tata Ndu felt the need to let him know that he came from 122 generations of wise men as was indeed just as wise as Price and possibly wiser. I believe the message about the stones meant that it takes an entire team of believers to keep things together. If one person does not stick with the belief then eventually everything will fall apart. I believe this philosophy can should be used to run a nation. Everyone must come together with the same beliefs and stick together so that we can run a successful country.

3. I believe the text is primarily ethical relativism. While Price thought the process of the voting was incorrect based on the American cultural, the African people believe that something like that can be done anywhere at any time. What was normal in African was definitely out of the norm for the U.S.

4. I don’t think the differences in religion and government can be compared to female genital mutilation. Although, the female mutilation was a religious belief it was very dangerous to the body and caused death, health issues, mental issues and even health issues to children born to the mother who had been mutilated. I feel like when a religious belief does so much damage to an individual, it should be re-evaluated. At some point they should care enough about the people to do away with such customs.
