Discuss the major recruitment and selection challenges facing an organization of your choice and strategies of overcoming the challenges.
According to Edwin Flippo: “Recruitment is the process of searching the candidates for employment and stimulating them to apply for jobs in the organization “.
Recruiting is the discovering of potential applications for actual or anticipated organizational vacancies. In other words, it is a ‘linking activity’ bringing together those with jobs and those seeking jobs.
Selection refers to the process of interviewing and evaluating candidates for a specific job and selecting an individual for employment based on certain criteria for example interviewing, reference checking and testing.
There are three types of recruitment needs;
* Planned – arising from changes in the organization, for example change in policy of retirement in an organization.
* Anticipated - movement in personnel which an organization can predict by studying trends in internal and external environment.
* Unexpected – Arises due to resignation, death, accident, illness etc.
Recruitment process
The recruitment process involves the following steps :
* Identifying the vacancy : - post to be filled, number of persons, duties to be performed, qualifications required
* Preparing the Job Description and Job Specification
* Locating and developing the sources of required number and type of employees
* Short listing
Sources of recruitment
There are two sources of recruitment, that is internal and external.
a) Internal
Seeks to fill positions from among the rank of those currently employed
Best suitable in succession planning – the process of ensuring a suitable supply of successors for current and future senior or key jobs.
