Traditional Education

Education is a condition of human survival, which simply means that one generation transmits the wisdom, and experience, which prepares the next generation for life duties and pressures. The writing of this assignment s critically to highlight the main components of traditional education which are common amongst various ethnic groups and the extent at which these elements made this type of education a conservative and not progressive influence on the minds of the young people

Different scholars have defined education in different ways. Kelly (1991:1 defines education as “a life-long process which the order generation impart skills values and knowledge into the young ones for their own survival. Therefore, traditional education according to Mwanakatwe (1968) defines education as a back-to-back basics or conventional education. This simply means that it values greatly with geography and by historical period. This was so because the main aim was to transmit those facts, skill, standard, morals and social conduct that adults considered being necessary for the next generation. Tiberondwa (1978), continued to say “although indigenous knowledge system varied from one society to another, the goals of the system were often similar based on essentially on education living.

Traditional education had five main components and these were history of ethnic group, apprenticeship in practical skills, social obligations and the inculcation of good manners, religious teaching and initiation ceremonies.

History of ethnic groups: This component involved more of historical information about a particular ethnic g group. It looked at the clan and the tribe and reflected much in the use of songs, d dances myths, rites and ceremonies. Ayittey (1991:30) essentially descent work on indigenous education explains, “Without any written interactive, the native of African education relied upon oracles, proverbs, storytelling and music to educate and inculcate…”
