COURSE DESCRIPTION
Business Communication is a core module intended to prepare students to communicate effectively and persuasively in business settings. Students will learn both oral and written communication skills by examining principles of interpersonal and intercultural communication. Students will acquire these skills and knowledge by completing in-class activities and assignments related to business situations. The module is largely skills-based and practice-oriented focusing on audience-centred approaches to the linguistic, stylistic, rhetorical and cultural elements of business communication. Designed with more emphasis on oral communication, ES2002 mirrors the business world’s expectation in terms of the 70-30% balance between oral and written communication.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to demonstrate an awareness of good communication concepts, principles and issues in both interpersonal and intercultural communication and deliver business messages both orally and in written form clearly, appropriately and persuasively in various business settings.
By the end of the module, the students should be able to:
1. Gain a general understanding of communication concepts, principles and issues. This includes communication as a complex process, with a focus on key aspects of interpersonal and intercultural communication.
2. Demonstrate awareness of important issues associated with good intercultural communication with audiences of diverse backgrounds in the global business environment.
