INTRODUCTION
The class I chose for the ICELT Lesson visit is the higher ability group of Year 7 students in the school. This is a class of students with varying abilities and attitudes towards learning English. There is a wide range of ability within the class. Some of the students are Pre-intermediate (A2/B1) level students while others are Intermediate (B1) and Upper-Intermediate (B2) level students. The aim of the lesson was to improve the students’ comprehension skills by asking and answering questions about the text. By asking and answering questions, the students are using a reading strategy that will enable them to gain a deeper understanding of the text and provide them with opportunities to connect with the ideas in the text.
I believe that the lesson had some successful aspects because the learners showed interest in the classroom activities and most learners were genuinely engaged during the lesson. On the other hand, there were aspects of the lesson that were less successful, which had an effect on the teacher’s ability to fully meet the objectives of the lesson.
I. ACHEIVEMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES
SUCCESSFUL ASPECTS:
According to Daniel Muijs and David Reynolds, “it is imperative for teachers to clearly state the objectives of the lesson from the outset and to emphasize the key points of the lesson throughout the lesson.” (Reynolds and Muijs, 2001, p. 6) I believe that the objectives of the lesson were communicated to the students in a clear and concise manner and were repeated during the course of the lesson to ensure that the students were well aware of the objectives they were expected to meet.
