Abstract

Leadership involves influencing the behaviors of individuals and groups to work toward predetermined goals ( Baack 2012). There are many leadership styles that one must possess to become a successful leader. When it comes to being a leader of an organization one must decide which leadership styles are needed based on the particular business setting. A leader must have the emotional stability to resolve conflicts within a workplace. Former CEO of Home Depot Robert Nardelli faced a lot of criticism due to his leadership style. During a recent analysis I did on Robert Nardelli I described his leadership style, leadership theories, and rather his leadership style was ethical or unethical.

Business Ethics

Robert Nardelli began at Home Depot in the year 2000 with no retail experience at all. In his efforts to increase profit gain Nardelli hired an old colleague of his to be head of the human resources department ( Charan p.62 ). Nardellis leadership style early on with home depot was a blend of encouraging employees as well as being very direct and aggressive when needed. This is a perfect example of Nardelli having the knowledge to understand that sometimes it takes more than one leadership style to become effective. One can also say this was a great display of political intelligence by Robert Nardelli. Political Intelligence indicates the willingness to use power and intimidation to achieve various results and it’s also an asset in circumstances in which change is required and subordinates are resistant to those changes ( Baack 2012 ). Robert developed a three step plan in which he used to increase profit and expand home depot to stay above the competitor at the time which was Lowe’s.
