There has been controversy over the past few years of whether or not people with unmanageable hair should wear their hair as is, meaning in its natural state or in a chemically altered state such as a hair relaxer. Many people want longer hair, but some may believe that a hair relaxer would make their hair grow faster, while others believe that hair in its natural state grows hair faster. The reason why hair seems to grow faster is because the root of the hair is stretched out, thus giving it the appearance that it has rapidly grown.

Natural Hair

With natural hair, it is shrunk and gives the appearance that it is short rather than long. Some people like their hair in its natural state is because they do not have to worry about damaging their hair strands with heat or a relaxer. Others like the fact that they can create many styles that stay put versus having to use a lot of styling products that help manipulate the hair strand into doing what the wearer wants it to do.

Another and greater issue is with women being comfortable with showing pride in wearing their hair natural for cultural bondage, accepting their hair texture, no longer seeing their natural hair as bad, but as a symbol of pride within and also outside their community. Back in the 1970’s the natural hair movement was one of the strongest in modern history, due to the growth of the Civil Rights Movement. People felt that altering their hair to make it straight was setting the tone for others to dismiss their hair texture for possible fear of being rejected by their peers who have naturally straight or loosely curled hair. In modern times, natural hair can also be a style to wear because people no longer want to damage their hair with chemicals. Also, those who wear their hair natural, have big advantage to natural hair because it retains much more moisture than relaxed hair.
