Madonna, with more than 300 million records sold worldwide, is one of the world’s top selling female artists. Madonna’s drive is what led her strategy and value to remain on top in an ever-changing music industry. Her ambition and refusal to be anything other than herself, combined with her understanding of the competitive environment and utilizing the resources at her disposal drove her evolving career to success.
Synopsis
Madonna’s success has been exhibited in not only financial terms but in her almost 40 year career and counting. Madonna released her first album in 1983 and was quickly named the hottest newcomer to US popular music by 1984 (Grant, 2010). Since then she has released numerous albums, been featured in several films and documentaries, promoting businesses, and touring all around the world. According to Grant (2010), “Over the past two decades the only female entertainer to come close to her in terms of income has been Oprah Winfrey.” Madonna’s sexual image shaped her early career until she became a mother in 1996.
