Leadership Philosophy

Abstract

Leaders who demonstrate effective leadership skills influence and motivate people to perform towards the leader’s goals and visions within an organization through change. Furthermore, having good, effective followership is just as significant as that of an effective leader in achieving strong organizational performance.

In my opinion, the basic philosophy with respect to effective leadership is very complex and broad and therefore, cannot necessarily be generalized to fit everyone. Every leader has their own philosophy, and there is no one size fits all. A philosophy is “a theory or attitude held by a person or organization that acts as a guiding principle for behavior” (Martz, 2014). As for theory, this serves as a foundation for how we act. An attitude is about mindset, and leaders must adopt a mindset so as to influence others in positive ways to achieve worthwhile results. Guiding principles are set forth by leaders so that employees know what to expect. While behavior, which has a direct correlation with a leader’s personality traits and attitude, will directly affect the relationship with those employees in an organization. In other words leaders “need to select relevant behaviors to influence follower behavior and performance” (Lussier & Achua 2016, p. 70). Moreover, I would have to say that my philosophy on leadership would be that of always tell the truth and admit when I’m wrong. Always give encouragement to employees otherwise how will they ever know if they are doing an excellent job. By the same token be stern and use constructive criticism for those employees who are performing below average. Know yourself and what you can bring to the table as a leader, be confident in yourself and in the decisions you make and most importantly believe in yourself. Create a working environment where employees enjoy working together and know that you as a leader are concerned for them. Be a leader that...
