Homework # 1

Describe how autonomous vehicles could be used by organizations around the world to improve business efficiency and effectiveness.

Autonomous vehicle Technology:

Autonomous means having the power for self-government.

Autonomous control implies good performance under significant uncertainties in the

environment for extended periods of time and the ability to compensate for system failures

without external intervention.

Unmanned vehicles needing no human assistance from another location.

Onboard sensors and navigation equipment such as laser and radars to detect objects.

Pre-programmed rules.

Train vehicles how to maneuver in different situations.

Autonomous vehicles sense their surroundings with such techniques as radar, lidar, GPS,

and computer vision. Advanced control systems interpret sensory information to identify

appropriate navigation paths, as well as obstacles and relevant signage. By definition,

autonomous vehicles are capable of updating their maps based on sensory input, allowing the

vehicles to keep track of their position even when conditions change or when they enter

uncharted environments.

Organization which use autonomous vehicles:

The auto industry has been moving toward more autonomous vehicles for years.

Americans already drive cars with crash-warning systems, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping

systems, and self-parking technology. Every major commercial automaker is conducting research

in this area, and full-scale autonomous vehicles are predicted within 10–15 years — some say

much sooner.

Autonomous vehicles can dramatically reduce the frequency of crashes. Further

automation is expected to save more lives: Automatic braking when the car detects an obstacle

will reduce rear-end collisions, and fully driverless cars will dramatically reduce human error,

which is responsible for most fatalities and crashes.

The DARPA Grand Challenge was designed to leverage American ingenuity to...
