How to win over colleagues and influence them

Fresh graduates without relevant experience not only need to strive in their work, they also will have to exercise good relational and social skill. Although they may have high qualification but they might also lack of social skill which is essential at work. Having a good social skill enable them to work effectively with colleagues, thus achieving a better working environment and also a better career prospect in future.

“The only way I can get you to do anything is by giving you what you want” (p.32) Put yourself in the shoes of others and think from their point of view, most of the time we only think of what we desire from others and tend to ignore other party’s interest. If we can see things from multiple angles, then we can try to formulate a win-win situation plan which will allow all parties to benefit instead of trying to win an argument or forcing your opinions on others.

"There is nothing else that so kills the ambitions of a person as criticisms from superiors. I never criticize any-one. I believe in giving a person incentive to work. So I am anxious to praise but loath to find fault. If I like anything, I am hearty in my approbation and lavish in my praise”. (p.37). During a discussion, we need to be more attentive, be open to opinions and allow all parties to provide input so that we can build rapport within the team. Always show encouragement for their contribution even if you do not agree and do not penalized even if the input is not relevant.

“Without doubt, the words that we use can have a huge impact on the overall meaning of the message, however, what's even more influential, is the tone which we use when we speak and the body language that we are displaying at the time”. Be tactful during communication as colleagues may feel intimidated if one is being too aggressive. Using a calm tone will allow you to communicate better during discussion without creating unnecessary conflicts among colleagues....
