Utley Food Markets is being managed by one of Mr. Utley’s descendants, which that person ended up unionizing the company. When that action was completed it took the Utley’s out of any leadership roles or management decisions in relations to the company. The union members are under protection of the union which any discipline issues or lack of personnel performance has to go through the union. It is virtually impossible to fire union members. The union negotiates all pay raises for employees which the raises are done across the board for all union members, and all performance evaluations are forwarded to the union after completion by the supervisor. The current employee performance evaluation is done through the form of one basic question being asked by the employee immediate supervisor “Overall, how well do you think this employee performed during the past year?” according to (Total Rewards – HRM 533 Student Course Guide, p.16). The employees both union and non-union don’t get any feedback from the evaluation by their supervisor. What that does is create a performance system which management has full control and limits the capabilities of the employees. Also the employees don’t get a chance to voice their concerns and issues regarding the work environment or unfair treatment. At least the union employees can turn to union leadership regarding issues with

their supervisor. I believe it was a bad decision to unionize the company because it gives an unfair advantage to union employees. By Utley management implementing a pay-for-performance system it will ensure a more equal opportunity work environment which is capable of motivating employees and creating a cohesive work force.
