TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING

1. Aside from teaching skills, the important attributes a very effective and efficient teacher should have and which you should aspire for are: magnetism (approachability) cheerfulness, optimism, sense of humor, sociability, and pleasing boys); cooperation and helpfulness, leadership, imitative and self confidence, self – control (calmness, dignity, poise and reserve); breadth of interest and good disposition (appreciativeness, courtesy, tact, sympathy, kindness, and consideration).

2. Together with a sound philosophy of life that would give meaning and a sense of direction to your personal as well as professional activities, you should endeavor to keep yourself physically fit.

3. Teaching begins where the learner is, and constant efforts should be made to encourage him to improve himself.

4. Teaching strategies and classroom organization and management must allow for individual differences.

5. To be meaningful, every learning task must be properly motivated, presented and evaluated.

6. The use of the overhead technique – addressing the question to the class, pausing, then asking somebody to recite – is commendable in asking questions during the recitation. The duration of the pause is determined by the nature of the question: the harder the question, the longer the pause.

7. A pupil or student should be given a reasonable amount of time to formulate his answer, but it should not be very long nor very short depending upon the extent of difficulty of the question.

8. Embarrassing and biased remarks should be shunned to show fairness and respect to the members of the class.

9. Assignments other than teaching should be accepted as opportunities to grow and to become a better teacher.

10. As much as possible, refrain from repeating your questions, answering your own questions and repeating pupils’ or students’ answers.

11. Questions answerable by “Yes” and “No” should be avoided if possible.
