onservation and preservationCheck Point: Conservation and Preservation

Preservation is an act of preserving the natural wilderness and ecological systems without causing damage to them. For example, wildlife preserves allow wildlife to roam freely with no disturbances legally allowed on the property. Conservation, on the other hand, takes a more balanced approach. Conservation attempts to preserve wildlife and eco-systems in a changing landscape. For instance, when a housing development goes in to a town, they try to preserve the wildlife while still changing the landscape.

I believe forests should be left in their natural state. I feel that if the law allows people to “friendly” harvest that many individuals would take advantage of the law. While most people would “friendly” harvest, the ones who don’t will do the damage to the natural state of the forest.

I would be inclined to pick the side of preservation. I feel the areas that are in our country now should be preserve as naturally as possible. It gives our country character. It allows you to go be with nature in its natural form and relieves stress.

Examples from the video that defend my position:

“This is the best of what America once was. It’s the largest intact temperate ecosystem left in the lower 48 states.”

“Seeing this country today is really no different than seeing it more than a hundred years ago. Transportation’s about the same, too. This is not a wilderness area, but there are very few signs of the modern world here. And for the people who come here, that’s the beauty of it.”

There is already industry here, an industry based on keeping the land unchanged.
