Eastern Religious Philosopher Quotations Buddhism: Siddhartha Gautama – “Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” I found this quote to reflect what his teaching was and is about. Buddha felt that human suffering was brought on by people’s own ignorance and selfishness. This quote to me says that if we open up ourselves and our selfish world to let others see happiness then they too will have life.

Eastern Religious Philosopher Quotations Taoism: Lao Tzu – “I have three treasures. Guard and keep them: The first is deep love, the second is frugality, and the third is not to dare to be ahead of the world. Because of deep love, one is courageous. Because of frugality, one is generous. Because of not daring to be ahead of the world, one becomes the leader of the world.” I feel this was a good quote because he did not feel that he should actually go out into the world and change it with his actions.

Eastern Religious Philosopher Quotations Confucianism: Confucious – “Forget injuries, never forget kindness.” Confucious felt the answer to fixing the world was to better one’s own personal life. Forgetting what others have done to us and to not hold grudges against them is the perfect example of a way to better the lives of ourselves and of others.

Eastern Religious Philosopher Quotations Tendia Buddhism: Dogen Kigen – “Do not follow the ideas of others, but learn to listen to the voice within yourself. Your body and mind will become clear and you will realize the unity of all things.” This quote represents how difficult he considered staying on track and carrying out your life goals.
