A search on the University of Phoenix library for an article based on original research resulted in a case study of the positive influence that technology has on improving language and communication skills of ESL students. The hypothesis stated that the use of technology would improve both language and communication skills of students learning English as a second language. The research questions students about what degree of technology use they have outside of structured ESL courses.

The research for the case study was done by interviewing random ESL students. The purpose of the research was to show that technology would be a great benefit to international or immigrant students as well as to the instructors that are assisting them. We are aware of how technology can be helpful in reading, writing and listening, but the survey was to prove that it can not only be a help but improve and accelerate an individual’s skills in learning a second language. According to the study, all students surveyed assured that using technology helped with the improvement of the different English skills, such as writing, reading and speaking. Several things mentioned that helped them was the many resources that the internet offered. Being that English is not natural to them, they benefit from online dictionaries, thesaurus and voice recordings for proper pronunciations. Programs such as Word also have resources useful to them, in form of grammar checks and spelling. The research from the random students proved the hypothesis, that using educational technological tools will improve the ability to learn the English language and improve the language and communication skills. Technology allows for a greater opportunity to practice the language and writing skills necessary for English education in the United States.
