Week 3 DQ 1
What are the effects of race, ethnicity, and gender in median income? Does this reflect bias? Refer to your textbooks when composing your response.
Figure 3.4 and table 3.1 on page 67 and 68 shows that the effects of race, ethnicity and gender all come into factor in the median income and reflects bias. The table chart shows that with a degree from any level high school to Doctorate degree white families still have a higher income than black families also the chart shows males make more than females. But the Asian American families earns higher than any other race or gender. I think this is biased because I believe that a company should have a pay scale for that person’s proper degree and not based on their race, ethnicity, and gender. I think that by doing this it is a close step closer to solving the discrimination and prejudice issues in this country.
Week 3 DQ 2
Affirmative action programs were intended to remove institutional discrimination and give minorities opportunities that had previously been unfairly denied to them. Do you support these programs? Do you think they have worked as intended? Explain.
I do support the Affirmative action programs because it has helped the minorities better opportunities in finding a job. But I believe that that programs like this doesn’t succeed over night it would take time and dedication to help make a difference in helping the minorities of this country. I also believe that programs like this help bring up and develop more confidence in the minorities in the work environment because confidence goes a long way in almost any job field. Some people are just sad because they discriminate against the minorities when they are just trying to make on honest living like everyone else. I think the programs have worked to a point they might help people with jobs but I believe that more training needs to go to stop discrimination.
