Leadership in today’s society is ever changing; not one approach is superior or holds a greater value than the other. American corporate life in the past revolved around something akin to the military’s command-and-control system. Many business leaders adapted the top down approach, much like the military and felt very comfortable emulating that command-and-control model (Slater, 2000). Today leaders are recognizing that there is not one perfect approach, but that they must adapt the approach and techniques that represent them as an individual and that are aligned with the organization’s vision.

In this paper the author will explain how different leadership styles affect group communication in General Electric’s (GE) organization, analyze the different sources of power found in the organization, and how the sources of power affect group and organizational communication. The writer will also identify the motivational theories, and describe the commitment of the workforce to the organization and their relation to the organization’s communication.

General Electric focuses on developing strong, strategic, ecomagination leaders who are devoted to carrying out the vision of the organization. One method to GE’s success is by implementing the power-influence leadership style. Power-influencing is a vital skill in today’s business arena; one in which a leader must learn to work with several diverse people to accomplish a task. The old saying “no more business are usual” holds true....
