The primary functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. The planning function is analyzing a decision and setting goals to be achieved. The organizing function is putting all of the necessary resources together to complete the job successfully. The leading function is motivating people to achieve the goals and maximize performance. The controlling function monitors the progress of the project and individuals and taking action if there is a need to. An effective manager has the following traits: technical skills, conceptual and decision skills, and interpersonal and communication skills. Having the technical skills is the ability of the manager to perform the task and have the basic knowledge of that task. Decision skills allow the manager to recognize a problem and make an appropriate decision to handle the situation. Communication skills will allow the manager to interact with their employees. For a manager to be successful they need to be a specialist but at the same time be a generalist. Decisions have to be made every day by managers. There are six stages in making decisions. The first stage is identifying the problem. The second is coming up with alternate solutions for the problem. The third is evaluating these alternate solutions. The fourth is choosing the solution. The fifth would be implementing the decision. The final stage is evaluating the decision to see if it is working (Bateman and Snell).

A leader can be defined as a person who motivates others to perform to their highest potential. A leader sets the tone and direction for the group to follow. They orchestrate change and move the team towards the goals of the organization. Some skills leaders posses are: self-confidence, motivation, drive, integrity, and knowledge of the business.
