The Mayor of a large city was given a free membership in an exclusive golf club by people who have received several city contracts. He also accepted gifts from organizations that have not done business with the City but might in the future. The gifts ranged from $200 tickets to professional sports events to designer watches and jewelry.

The Mayor of a large city was given a free membership in an exclusive golf club I would assume that this was offered because of the Mayor’s status or title. The mayor also accepting gifts for business, it all ethically wrong. This comes’ off like a bribe to me. Gift giving can be excellent way to build lasting business relationships. However, in appropriate gifts can be bribes, overly expensive gifts, etc. Participating in illegal gifting says something about you and your business. I do believe there are occasions where a gift may be appropriate. For example, we give incentives s at my job to reward our employees. However, this Mayor is really benefiting from the good. The different companies are pretty much bribing the Mayor to be able to get what they need, and the Mayor shouldn’t accept them. The acceptance of gifts by the Mayor can comprise his honesty and also involve personal interest in the contracts. I don’t believe that the city will benefit from this type of behavior. Locke would have wanted the city to trust the mayor, and give him the benefit of the doubt. And trust that the mayor will make the right decision. Personally, I don’t think that is possible in this type of situation.
