Leaders We Need Now

The article helps the leader by addressing current issues related to the changes in organizational leadership. The author in this article points out the comparisions between Generation X and Y. Generation X’s employees were independent, they started their own businesses, and were better educated than the generations before them. Whereas Generation Y employees seem to expect a lot and feel the world owes them something (Erickson, 2010).

Leaders need to be rooted in the present while looking toward the future, to meet the demands of a constantly shifting and global workplace . Future leaders need to be able to lead and develop teams, be able to use technology, and build relationships/partnerships. Some of the characteristics of past leaders included integrity, customer commitment, and vision (Meister & Willyerd, 2010). Companies today want skilled workers for the lowest cost possible. In order to accomplish this, businesses feel the need to expand their operations globally. To be effective, leaders would need to be comfortable in managing globally, using technology such as videoconferencing, social networks, and instant messaging etc. With the challenge of expanding globally comes certain obstacles such as technology, culture, time zones, and communication. Global teams not only affect the bottom line but also maximize expertise from a variety of people which provide companies a more accurate picture of international customers' needs (Soloman, 1995).

In conclusion, we can all learn from one another regardless of age, race, or gender. Organizations today and in the future must be willing to share ideas, and listen to one another.
