Today diversity is a much a part of the business world as I-phones, emails and computers. What is diversity? Diversity represents the multi-tude of individual differences and similarities that exist among people. (inserted citation) Diversity exists and pertains to everyone regardless of age, gender, religion, sex, race, or sexual orientation. Diversity has become such an important aspect of our everyday lives that there are now guidelines to help govern diversity. Some of these guidelines include affirmative action, Americans with Disabilities Act and Civil Rights Act. As a manager you have to be able to understand diversity and how to manage it in order to be successful both individual and as a key component to your team. When looking at diversity it is best to compare it to an onion. Onions have many important layers that make up its characteristics. In order to be able to manage diversity it is important to understand the layers of diversity and why they are important.

This model is based on five layers. The first layer is personality. Personality as defined from the American Physiological Association is the unique psychological qualities of an individual that influence a variety of characteristic behavior patterns (both overt and covert) across different situations and over time. Personality can be broken down into five dimensions. The five dimensions of personality are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness to experience. Extraversion personalities are often people that are outgoing and talkative. Agreeableness personalities are people that are trusting, and good-hearted. Conscientiousness personalities are people that are dependable, and reliable. Emotional stability people are relaxed, secure and unworried. Openness to experience people are curious and broad-minded.
